Children usually make up more than half the population in vulnerable communities. They can interact with other children and adults if they are well-informed and supported. They can be effective channels of information and role models.
Previous experiences with children and young people in disasters demonstrated that they need special care and assistance, but, on the other hand, they can also provide support to emergency managers. For instance, UNICEF highlighted that during the Tsunami in Indonesia in 2004, children and young people did important contributions.
